DeForest Kelley was an American actor, screenwriter, poet, and singer. He is known for his role as Dr. McCoy in the Star Trek franchise.

DeForest was the son of Clora S. (Casey) and The Rev. Ernest David Kelley. His father was a Baptist minister. He was named after pioneering electronics engineer Lee de Forest. He was married to Carolyn Dowling, until his death.

DeForest’s paternal grandfather was Emory Franklin/Jackson Kelley (the son of Owen Kelley and Harriet/Harriett Guest). Emory was born in Georgia. Owen possibly was the son of William Kelley and Elizabeth Ann Singleton. Harriet was the daughter of Colbert Cobb Guest and Elizabeth Bethel.
