Hailing from a well-known family, George Clooney was born in Lexington, Kentucky to TV talk show host Nick Clooney and his wife Nina, a councilwoman and former state beauty queen. Clooney’s Early Life
George Clooney was born into a Catholic family that richly holds English, Irish and German ancestry.
Early on, Clooney’s father was engaged in a rising career in television broadcasting, and because of that the family moved around a lot within Kentucky and Ohio as the children grew.
By the time George was in the second grade, they had left behind their original bluegrass region hometown of Lexinton, Kentucky and settled in Columbus, Ohio. There, George attended St. Michael’s school in Worthington, Western Row Elementary School, as well as St. Susanna School in Mason, Ohio.
His parents eventually relocated back to Kentucky a little after George had entered the seventh grade.
As a middle schooler, Clooney was diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy, a medical condition which partially paralyzed a part of his face. There was however, no permanent damage and the paralysis went away within that same year.
George Clooney is known for crediting his positive outlook to the brief malady that afflicted him as an adolescent. In an interview with Larry King, he said “It’s probably a great thing that it happened to me because it forced me to engage in a series of making fun of myself. And I think that’s an important part of being famous. The practical jokes have to be aimed at you.”
Teen Life and Beyond
When Clooney was around thirteen years old, his family once again resettled in Kentucky. George began attending Augusta High School and showed a keen interest in sports, particularly basketball and baseball, both of which he took up.
In 1977, he tried out for the Cincinnati Reds, but didn’t make the player cuts. To Clooney’s credit, that didn’t put a damper on his spirits at all. He was a natural born humorist, and according to his father, was well known as the clown jock.
However, after graduating high school in 1979, Clooney took a detour and decided to follow in his father’s footsteps. He attended Northern Kentucky University and majored in broadcast journalism. Later, he attended the University of Cincinnati.
Soon though, Clooney’s sights began shifting towards a career in acting.
Not long after college, Clooney visited a movie set in his hometown of Augusta, Kentucky where a partial filming of the TV miniseries Centennial was taking place.
He landed a role as an extra on the show, and it seems to be the time Clooney decided for certain that a place on the big screen was where he belonged.
His first major role turned up in 1984, in the form of a briefly aired sitcom called E/R on CBS. Clooney played the recurring role of Mark “Ace” Kolmar on the show.
